Over the course of my life, no single species has caused me more angst and pain than the scorpion. Between the at least three that have stung me, the one that fell out of my hat and scurried across the floor when I went to readjust it in the mirror, the one I took a shower with, the half-of-one I found squished on my leg at breakfast, the tens (fifty?) that I've had to chase around various cabins with my tennis shoe, and the hundreds I've "felt" crawling on me in the middle of the night (all of the above at camp - Austin isn't that hardcore Texas), scorpions and I have a certain amount of animosity between us. Well, last night I got even...
Donghuamen Night Market opens up every night in Beijing down by Wangfujing. It's the place in the city where you can go to see and try every kind of food you'd never ever want to eat. Now I really have absolutely no idea what came over me (except perhaps the desire to be able to say, next time I see a scorpion, "Hey - I've eaten one of those") and I don't think I could have actually gotten this cursed little arachnid into my mouth were it not for the pressure of two little Australian kids walking by as I was wavering who decided they were going to see us me scorpion and the small multitude of spectators they proceeded to attract. I mean, who can say no to cute little Australian kids, honestly...? Anyway, I'm now feeling pretty adventurous. Maybe I'll even try vegetables when I get back home...
